Mustagh Ata Peak
The father of ice mountains
Mustagh Ata is a 7509 meters high peak located on the northern side of the Tibetan Plateau in Xinjiang, China, where itinerant herders line and tend their roaming cattle.
The peak has lately gained traction among domestic and foreign mountaineers, thanks to the unique atmosphere, easy access, low expedition costs and availability immense information. Even though the peak is physically closer to the Pamir, yet sometimes it is deemed as a part of the Kunlun Shan. The peak is easy to climb and features a mild gradient on the west. Due to the dry weather of Xinjiang province, you need to undergo a complete acclimatization period.
The first full fledge expedition to Mustagh Ata peak took place in 1956 when a team of Soviet and Chinese climbers summited the peak from the western ridges. Before that, Swedish explorer Sven Hedin made the first historical attempt to summit the peak in 1894, but remained unsuccessful.
