Gandhara Civilization Tour
Explore the hometown of Buddhism
From the plains of Taxila to the beautiful valleys and rugged mountains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and from the footsteps of the Hindu Kush into the heart of the Karakorum mountains, the Gandhara Civilization has lured tourists from across the world for decades now.
The 3,000 years old Gandhara Civilization covers a vast territory, including Peshawar, Taxila, Swat, Malakand Agency, Bajur Agency, Mardan and the Hindush Kush and Karakorum mountain areas. These areas have remained the center of Buddhism for centuries. Buddhism is considered to have spread as far as Japan and Korea from these regions that fall in today’s Pakistan. Arechlogists have found and preserved a range of fascinating items and structures that build a great record of the Gandhara Civilization.
The rock carving on rocks along the Karakorum Highway (KKH) also give a sneak peek into the history of Gandhara. Historical accounts suggest that Alexander the great travelled to Taxila from Macedonia in 326 BC. Swat Valley is the land of splendor and romance. It has remained the holy land of Buddhism, and it became popular as the center of pilgrimage for Buddhists.
