Diran Peak: The snow dome
Nestled beautifully in the Karakorum
The moderate pyramid shaped Diran Peak is situated in on the eastern side of the famous Rakoposhi in Nagar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. The 7788 meters high peak falls in the Karakorum mountain range.
Though easily accessible and not much arduous to climb, the beautiful peak is also among the most unpredictable ones due to the treacherous storms and avalanches that can hit any time.
Diran Peak was first summited by a team of Austrian mountaineers in 1968. Earlier attempt from a route that starts in Hunza, goes up north and then west, failed and two mountaineers were never found. That was followed by two other expeditions that too remained unsuccessful. The Austrian climbers used the North Face route and were met by success. A route from the Northeast Ridge of Diran was discovered in 1993 and the peak was summited from the south side in 1996.
The good news is that you also get epic views of the surrounding areas from the peak, including spectacular views of the Hunza Valley. The picturesque views of the lush green villages, the surrounding mountains, and the fruit orchards and fields of Hunza and Nagar valleys would absolutely leave you flabbergasted.
